The Godfather parts I-III, mild spoilers, incest in movie (???), weird family dynamics IRL
so i watched The Godfather parts I, II, and III and i feel like what makes those movies so great was lost on me. part I and II i just didn't really "get", but part III was absolutely ruined by the weird family dynamics, both on a textual as well as a meta level. Francis Ford Coppola's daughter Sofia Coppola plays Al Pacinos characters daughter which is weird in itself, but she's got this whole "will they won't they" love thing with her cousin??? there's a scene where Sofia photographs Al Pacinos character and says directly into the camera "smile, daddy" which is like this odd fourth wall break, because her actual father is the director and likely somewhere behind the camera. at the end there's this montage that begins with Al Pacino and Sofia Coppola dancing together and then cuts to all the women Al Pacinos character loved and danced with during the movies which is such a disgusting juxtaposition. i am so very uncomfortable right now. yikes. this honestly shines a different on Sofia Coppolas filmography…
The Godfather parts I-III, no spoilers
the less egregious part was that i really do feel like i need an infographic explaining all the family and business relationships in those movies to me. there's so many characters and they all look different in each movie because they age. to be fair though, this is a problem that i have and not the movies fault.
